Self Defense and the Left-Handed Advantage in Combat

If you’re left-handed, you may have an advantage in hand-to-hand combat or a knife fight over the far more numerous right-handed people of world.  While the left-handed minority adjust at an early age to live in a world designed for the right handed, the right-handed rarely, if ever, have to accommodate to left-handed situations and tools. In combat, this means that a right-handed combatant will generally have little experience fighting a left-handed combatant, while the left-handed combatant will likely be much more familiar with right-handed fighters.  Simply put, a right-hander is just not expecting a mean left hook.

Wolf/Coyote/Fox Urine-Based Animal Deterrents

running wolf

Recently a friend brought my attention to a group of products I thought might be fake at first glance: various wolf/coyote/fox urine products.  People pay good money for animal urine for purposes that are actually practical, and not part of some freaky disgusting sexual fetish?  Turns out it’s true!

It happens to be that there are some practical applications for these products.  Woodland critters, such as deer, racoons, rabbits, armadillos, and even some domesticated animals such as cats get one whiff of predator urine (which you would apply to any spot outdoors you want to keep animal pests away from, such as your garden), and when they smell it, their senses trick them into thinking predatory creatures are nearby.  Since these little woodland creatures don’t want to become a meal for a coyote or wolf or fox, they tend leave the spot alone.

  • If you enjoy the birds that live in your area, this might be a useful tool to help you enjoy their presence without worrying about neighborhood cats preying on them.
  • Some people report that this trick only works on racoons for so long before they return.  Perhaps they’re smart enough to figure out they’ve been tricked?
  • If you have a garden or koi pond that keeps being ravaged by such pests (such as native otters from a nearby steam), you might want to experiment with a little wolf urine applied around the area.  Your other alternative to keeping your koi pond from being raided might be to put a metal screen over the koi pond to protect the fish, but detracting from the beauty of the pond.
  • Be careful with it though and and try not to spill it, it is urine after all and smells very unpleasant.  Some products come in pellet form and are less offensive to the human nose.

Products such as these can be bought on online stores like Amazon.com or at some gardening/hardware stores, like Ace Hardware. Read more »
